Amy Leus has mailed her last package. The 35-year U.S. Postal Service employee is officially retired after saying her goodbyes last week to her “nice” Los Altos customers.

Local residents may not know her by name, but Amy Leus – who worked at the Los Altos U.S. Postal Service office on Main Street – delivered smiles to Bay Area postal customers for more than 35 years. The longtime employee retired at the end of January.

After working in South San Francisco for the first 25 years of her career, Leus joined the Los Altos branch in 2002. Regular visitors to the Main Street post office may recognize her as someone who quietly doled out stamps and weighed packages for a seemingly endless stream of customers.

Leus said it would be difficult to leave so many friendly faces behind.

“I enjoy the people here because they’re so nice. … They never say anything, despite the long lines,” she said. “I feel like crying when they’re hugging me. They say that no one can replace me.”

Leus said she plans to spend her newfound free time performing ministry work with her church, gardening and enjoying her grandchildren.
