Former U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wis.) is scheduled to discuss “The Citizens United Decision (2010) and the Role of Corporate Money in the American Political Process” 4 p.m. Saturday at Congregation Beth Am, 26790 Arastradero Road, Los Altos Hills.

Architect discusses design for Neutra House series

Bay Area architect Cass Calder Smith is scheduled to discuss his design theories 6-7 p.m. Thursday at Hillview Community Center, 97 Hillview Ave., as the fifth speaker in the 2012-2013 Los Altos Neutra House Architecture Speaker Series.

A catered reception follows at the nearby Los Altos Neutra House, 181 Hillview Ave.

Smith will explain some of his noteworthy residential designs from the past 20 years. Central to most of his work is a strong, dynamic connection between indoor and outdoor living spaces. It is both a design strategy and the source of a casual environment for modern living.

Maximizing views and links to captured outdoor spaces are important features of his residential designs.

Tickets for the lecture are $20 general admission, $10 for students.

Cantabile Youth Singers host benefit arts gala

The Cantabile Youth Singers of Silicon Valley have scheduled an arts gala 6 p.m. Saturday at the Stanford Faculty Club, 430 Lagunita Drive, Palo Alto.

The evening will honor Ge Wang, Cantabile’s 2013 Champion of the Arts. Festivities include cocktails, a live auction and a musical program.

Tickets are $125 per person. Proceeds benefit the education of Cantabile Youth Singers of Silicon Valley.

Lectures highlight Vermeer exhibition

Fine-arts docent Kay Payne is scheduled to present two illustrated lectures on Johannes Vermeer’s famous painting “Girl with a Pearl Earring,” 7:30-9 p.m. today and Feb. 13 in the Program Room of the Los Altos main library, 13 S. San Antonio Road.

The lectures explore the exhibition “Girl with a Pearl Earring: Dutch Paintings from the Mauritshuis,” which runs through June 2 at the de Young Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco in Golden Gate Park.

In addition to Vermeer’s masterpiece, the de Young exhibition will include more than 30 additional paintings from the Dutch Golden Age, including works by Rembrandt, Frans Hals, Jan Steen, Carel Fabritius, Gerard ter Borch and Rachel Ruysch.

Egyptian senator visits Los Altos library

Egyptian Sen. Abdul Mawgoud Dardery is scheduled to discuss “The Egyptian Revolution: Opportunities and Challenges” 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Los Altos main library, 13 S. San Antonio Road.

Dardery is a senator from Luxor, Egypt. In addition to teaching in the United States for several years, he acted as a consultant on an educational tour of Egypt in 2010 with 48 faculty and students from South Bay colleges.

Museum features ‘Bear in Mind’ display

The Los Altos History Museum’s current exhibition, “Bear in Mind: The Story of the California Grizzly,” is on display through March 24.

The exhibition details the history of the state bear.

SAy Hi helps local seniors

The SAy Hi Support Group offers assistance to seniors living in San Antonio Hills, the unincorporated area near Los Altos.

Volunteers provide free rides (within a 20-minute drive, with 24-hours notice) to local destinations, including hospitals, beauty salons, shopping centers and religious services.

SAy Hi members meet 4 p.m. the third Monday of every month at First Republic Bank, 400 S. San Antonio Road, in Los Altos.
