Pinewood School point guard Marissa Hing made a team-high four 3-pointers in Friday’s 74-46 rout of Sacred Heart Prep. Doc Scheppler has coached several great basketball teams in his 18 years at Pinewood School, yet he couldn’t recall any of them matching what his girls did in the fourth quarter Friday against Sacred Heart Prep. The Panthers hit eight 3-pointers in eight minutes, transforming a close game into a 74-46 rout.
“Unbelievable,” Scheppler said. “I don’t think we’ve ever done that as a Pinewood team. It was amazing.” Host Pinewood opened the fourth the same way it closed it – burying a 3 – and missed just twice from beyond the arc in the quarter. “Once we hit one, we start flowing better,” said sophomore guard Marissa Hing, whose team-high 16 points included four 3s. The Panthers’ first 15 points of the period came on 3-pointers, the start of a 17-0 run that rendered the Gators toothless. “In the fourth quarter it was like, ‘Bang, bang, bang – this game is over,’” said Scheppler, whose team improved to 4-1 in the West Bay Athletic League and 14-4 overall. “It closed the door.” Forward Chloe Eackles helped slam it shut, scoring 11 of her career-high 14 points in the fourth. The freshman drained a trio of 3s – beginning with a shot from the left baseline on Pinewood’s first possession – then made a pair of free throws to push the lead to 63-46 with four minutes left. “That was her best game ever,” Scheppler said. “The 3s she hit in the fourth were key.” Hing, whom Scheppler called “our best shooter,” added two 3s in the fourth; Monique McDevitt, Kendahl Wallis-Lang and Morgan Tomberlin contributed one each. The Panthers made 18 in all (on 41 attempts), four more than they had in any game this season. “This is the potential of our team – we have great shooters,” Scheppler said. “For the whole season, we’ve been shooting about 28 percent from 3 – not very good – but we’re capable of doing better. In shooting drills, they compare to any of the teams I’ve had, in terms of shooting proficiency.” The third quarter was a different story, however. Pinewood connected on only one of its 10 shots from 3-point range, enabling Sacred Heart to rally. The Panthers’ 21-point lead dwindled to 46-41 by quarter’s end. “We’re usually a really bad third-quarter team,” Hing said. “We started hitting shots (in the fourth) and got a big lead.” Eight Panthers scored in the game, with junior forward Leeana Bade (13 points) joining Hing and Eackles in double figures.
