 Calder Smith Bay Area architect Cass Calder Smith is scheduled to discuss his design theories 6-7 p.m. Feb. 7 at Hillview Community Center, 97 Hillview Ave., as the fifth speaker in the 2012-2013 Los Altos Neutra House Architecture Speaker Series. A catered reception follows at the nearby Los Altos Neutra House, 181 Hillview Ave.
Smith will explain some of his noteworthy residential designs from the past 20 years. Central to most of his work is a strong, dynamic connection between indoor and outdoor living spaces. It is both a design strategy and the source of a casual environment for modern living. Maximizing views and links to captured outdoor spaces are important features of his residential designs.
Many of Smith’s approaches are unconventional, reflecting his childhood in communes, including Woodside’s Starhill Academy, with its treehouses, underground homes and domes.
While earning his architectural degrees at UC Berkeley, Smith worked as a carpenter, which explains his projects’ affinity for wood, which he combines with the simplicity of his mentors, Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe.
“I think people like being around wood as much as carpenters do,” Smith said.
Tickets for the lecture are $20 general admission, $10 for students. The reception is $20 per person, subject to space availability. Tickets may be purchased online or at the door.
Members of the American Institute of Architects can receive Continuing Education units for the lectures. West Valley College students studying architecture may attend the lectures at no cost with valid student identification.
