The Mountain View High boys soccer team’s recent loss to rival Los Altos may have kick-started the Spartans.
Mountain View shut out its next two opponents – scoring a total of six goals – and returned to the top of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division standings last week.
The Spartans (3-1-1 league, 9-2-2 overall) opened the week with a 2-0 victory at Santa Clara, a team that had not lost a league game this season. Chris Barnes scored the first goal on what Mountain View coach Jim McGuirk called “a nice header” in the first half of the Jan. 14 match. The Spartans doubled their lead in the second half on a shot from Guillermo Burger, set up by “a very nice pass by Brad Bumgarner,” McGuirk said.
The Mountain View defense did the rest, turning away the Bruins time after time.
“The defense played a great game against a very tough Santa Clara attack,” said McGuirk, who praised goalie Danny Ballesteros and defenders Travis Pinkner, Keenan Zucker, Justin Ruweler and Logan Allen.
Two days later, the host Spartans subdued Homestead 4-0, scoring three goals after intermission. Burger totaled two goals; Barnes and Zucker added one each.
Shaking off a 2-1 loss to Los Altos the previous week, Mountain View has strengthened its chances of winning the De Anza Division title for the fourth year in a row.
Although the Spartans lost several key players from a team that reached the Central Coast Section Division I semifinals last year, McGuirk went into league believing Mountain View was capable of defending its league crown.
“I think we have a pretty good chance to at least contend for a league title again,” he said. “We lost our entire midfield, but the new guys are shaping up well. We also lost three defenders and a goalie, but again, the guys in there now were solid backups last year and are doing a good job.”
The Spartans are scheduled to visit Los Gatos 3:30 p.m. today and host Saratoga at the same time Friday.
Eagles shoot blanks at Gunn
Gunn edged host Los Altos 1-0 in a Jan. 16 De Anza Division game.
The Eagles – who two days earlier tied Homestead 1-all on a goal by Ed Sartor (assist Ruben Hernandez) – went to 1-2-1 in league and 3-6-1 overall.
Los Altos is set to visit Saratoga 3:30 p.m. today.
Lancers roll Riordan
Visiting St. Francis routed Riordan 4-0 Jan. 16, improving to 4-1-1 in the West Catholic Athletic League and 7-1-1 overall.
The Lancers are slated to visit rival Bellarmine 3:15 p.m. today.
