All services at Los Altos United Methodist Church Sunday will focus on the need for education for African women. The Rev. Dale Weatherspoon, pastor at Good Samaritan United Methodist Church in Cupertino, is scheduled to serve as guest preacher. Weatherspoon attended the opening of Africa University in Zimbabwe in 1992, which recently celebrated 20 years as the first private international university in Zimbabwe. With 40 students at its opening, it now has an enrollment of approximately 1,200.
The Los Altos United Methodist Women established the African Student Education Fund in 2005 to raise money for tuition for 34 African women. As a complement to the services, the Los Altos United Methodist Women have scheduled “Sale-Abration 2013” 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4:30-7 p.m. Sunday in Creekside Center. The annual fundraiser, also dedicated to the African Student Education Fund, will feature gift items, floral arrangements and baked goods as well as snacks and other edibles for upcoming Super Bowl Sunday. Sunday services are scheduled 8, 9:30 and 11:15 a.m. and 5 p.m. A dinner will follow the evening Creekside service. All are invited to services and the dinner. Los Altos United Methodist Church is located at 655 Magdalena Ave. For more information, call 948-1083 or visit laumc.org.
