Arline T. Harman moved upward and onward January 3, 2013 with 97 years and a lifetime of memories behind her. She was born January 25, 1916 in Lincoln, Nebraska to Hazel Lesh Hampton and Chester Courtney Hampton, and raised in Oregon, Washington, Missouri, and San Francisco, CA. It was in San Francisco that she met and married the love of her life, Leon W. “Pete” Harman.

In 1941, Arline and Pete moved to Salt Lake City, Utah where they purchased and operated a small, outdated restaurant. Their modest restaurant took an upward turn in the early 1950s when a chance meeting with Colonel Harland Sanders led them to become the Colonel’s first business partners and first franchisees of Kentucky Fried Chicken. As their restaurant system expanded through the 1950s and 1960s, the Harmans relocated back to Los Altos, California where they established their company headquarters and have lived ever since.

Arline loved animals. She rode in the Silver Spurs Drill team in Salt Lake City and bred and owned Champion Arabian horses in California. Her love of her farm animals and particularly her house dogs provided her a constant source of activity, entertainment and satisfaction.

Arline was blessed with the wonderful assistance provided to her by her caregivers, Maria Rocha and Pattsy Hakaumotu during the later years of Arline’s life. The family is extremely grateful for their devoted attention.

Arline is survived by her husband of 75 years, Leon W. “Pete” Harman, children Barry (Elaine) Harman and Dawn Cook, grandchildren Tina (Taylor) Florence, Todd Harman, Mark (Julie) Harman, and Kim Cook, and great-grandchildren Jake Florence and Sam Florence.

A Celebration of Arline’s life was held Tuesday, January 8th at Spangler Mortuary in Los Altos, California. A second Celebration of Arline’s life was held at McDougal Funeral Home (801-968-3800) in Taylorsville, UT on Monday, January 14th.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to one of Arline’s favorite charities, Guide Dogs for the Blind, 350 Los Ranchitos Road, San Rafael, CA 94903.
