Living Classroom seeks volunteers

The Los Altos School District’s Living Classroom Program seeks volunteers who enjoy working with students and appreciate nature.

The program reaches all grade levels within the district and includes hands-on education in science, math and social studies.

A docent, an assistant docent and one or two volunteer parents direct lessons inside or outside the classroom.

Training and materials are provided. Training sessions are scheduled 8:30-11:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 28 and Feb. 4 at the school district offices, 201 Covington Road.

Local groups recruit volunteers

JustREAD, a nonprofit, community-funded literacy program, seeks tutors to work at least one hour per week to help middle and high school students with reading.

The program trains tutors to work one-on-one with students in a supervised classroom setting during the school year.

JustMATH, a volunteer math tutoring program, needs volunteer tutors to work at least one hour per week to help students improve their math skills.

The supervised programs are held at Graham and Crittenden middle schools in Mountain View.

Music for Minors needs volunteers

Music for Minors seeks volunteers interested in training to become music teachers for students in kindergarten through third grade.

The nonprofit organization, devoted to keeping music alive in local schools in the wake of state budget cuts, provides sequential, standards-based music education programs for children throughout Santa Clara and San Mateo counties.

Music for Minors will provide volunteers the tools necessary to teach music in the elementary classroom. Training is provided, and volunteers may attend sessions in Los Altos or Redwood City.
