Architect Andrea Cochran headlines Neutra House speaker series Print E-mail

Renowned landscape architect Andrea Cochran, FASLA, is scheduled to headline the 2012-2013 Los Altos Neutra House Architecture + Design Speaker Series 6-7 p.m. Thursday at Hillview Community Center, 97 Hillview Ave. A catered reception will follow at the Los Altos Neutra House, 181 Hillview Ave.

Cochran will address landscape design in the context of the series’ theme, “Modernism Defined/Redefined.”

Rooted in Northern California modernism, Cochran has practiced in the Bay Area for more than 30 years. Her San Francisco-based firm has a reputation for seamlessly integrating landscape, art and architecture.

Cochran’s approach to placemaking emphasizes the unique culture and climate of the region, using a restrained palette of materials to heighten the experience of the natural environment.

“This is an occasion to celebrate the legacy of modernism in California, and to talk about how we should build upon that legacy,” said Cochran of her Los Altos appearance. “It is important to think about how we can use sustainability to expand our definition of modernism in design practice today – whether as a designer or as a client.”

Midway through its fourth season, the six-month series provides an opportunity to explore trends and traditions in architecture and design in a casual setting. Although the speakers are recognized leaders in their fields, the talks are designed for the general public.

Tickets – $20 general admission, $10 students – are available in advance or at the door. The reception is $20 per person, subject to space availability.

Members of the American Institute of Architects can receive Continuing Education units for attending the lectures.

West Valley College students studying architecture may attend the lectures at no charge with valid student identification.

Upcoming speakers

Feb. 7: Cass Calder Smith will discuss his residential work, noted for the positive and negative outdoor space connections of the house, the site and the landscape.

March 14: Leo Marmol, FAIA, will explain his firm’s approach to the restoration of historically significant homes designed by Richard Neutra, Cliff May and John Lautner.

About Neutra House

Designed by famed architect Richard Neutra and built in 1939 as one of “Three Little Cottages in an Orchard,” the structure was moved six blocks to its present location and repurposed in 2008 as a small conference center managed by the Los Altos Community Foundation.

Proceeds from the Los Altos Neutra House Architecture + Design Speaker Series, the Film + Conversation Series, Celebrate Architecture events and periodic   “LA Modern” Home Tours assist the Neutra House in retiring the remaining capital debt for the preservation. At that point, the Neutra House will be self-sustaining from its rental income.

The mission of the Neutra House is to sponsor architecture-related programs that are engaging, entertaining and educational. Tours are available by appointment.
