LEAD class begins this month

The Los Altos Community Foundation sponsors the Leadership Education ADvancement Program (LEAD), which provides an in-depth introduction to Los Altos and Los Altos Hills.

The foundation developed the course in 1996 to provide information about the community and to encourage new and enhanced personal involvement.

The 2013 course opens with a half-day workshop Jan. 26, followed by sessions scheduled twice a month – 7-9 p.m. Wednesdays, February through June.

Since its inception, approximately 300 participants have graduated from the course, nicknamed “Los Altos 101.” Many have used the experience to become elected officials, nonprofit board members or more committed volunteers.

LEAD facilitates dialogue between community leaders and participants in a setting designed to foster camaraderie, allow time for everyone to be involved and ask questions, and provide a forum where candid discussions about objectives and challenges can occur.

Each session has a focused agenda. Topics include local government, commerce, education, the Los Altos Library, Foothill College, health care, the arts and community service organizations.

Cost is $125.

Knitting event warms soldiers, families

As part of the Silicon Valley Reads 2013 theme “Invisible Wounds of War,” the Los Altos Library has scheduled a “Knit/Crochet-In” 3-5 p.m. Jan. 17 in the Program Room of the main library, 13 S. San Antonio Road.

Participants will make items for active-duty soldiers, wounded veterans and Afghan families.

Organizers plan to donate the items to the nonprofits Warmth for Warriors (warmthforwarriors.com), Soldiers’ Angels (soldiersangels.org) and Afghans for Afghans (www.afghansforafghans.org).

Participants are encouraged to check the groups’ websites for guidelines and select projects. Bring your own pattern, needles and yarn.

Museum features ‘Bear in Mind’ display

The Los Altos History Museum has scheduled “Bear in Mind: The Story of the California Grizzly,” on display through March 24.

Scientists estimate that 10,000 grizzlies once roamed California. However, the grizzly had vanished from the state by the early 1900s.

The Los Altos History Museum is located at 51 S. San Antonio Road. Admission is free. Hours are noon to 4 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays.
