This week’s St. Francis Holiday Tournament features four boys basketball teams that could face each other again in February. “The bottom half of the bracket is like the CCS Division II tournament,” St. Francis coach Mike Motil said. “It should be good.”
If they make the Central Coast Section playoffs as expected, St. Francis, Mountain View, Leigh and El Camino will compete in Division II. St. Francis and Mountain View are scheduled to meet 7:45 p.m. Thursday in the opening round of the three-day holiday tournament. Leigh and El Camino are slated to play before them (6:15 p.m.). The top half of the bracket features tourney mainstay San Ramon Valley, Soquel, San Leandro and Sweetwater, a first-time participant from National City in Southern California. St. Francis is off to a 5-1 start this season, winning more with effort than excellence. “What we lack in basketball ability, we have to make up for in hard work,” Motil said. The Lancers rallied from a 17-point deficit to top Aragon 70-64 in the Merv Harris Invitational Dec. 15. Khalid Johnson scored 19 points in the win. Los Altos entered the holiday break with a 5-6 record. The Eagles last played Dec. 15, beating Sobrato 52-40 in the Prospect Invitational to finish 2-1 in the tourney. Down 11-9 after a quarter, Los Altos outscored Sobrato 43-29 the rest of the way. Nathan Vieira paced the Eagles with 18 points. “We’ve competed well against some really strong teams,” coach Bob McFarlane said, “and although our record doesn’t indicate how well we are doing, we can see the improvement and feel well prepared for league play.” Girls basketball Los Altos finished third at the Half Moon Bay Tournament, winning two out of three games to improve to 4-5 overall. The Eagles routed Jefferson 61-34 in the first round, lost 58-50 to Burlingame the second day and cruised to a 51-25 victory over Hillsdale to place third Dec. 15. Los Altos had a different leading scorer in each game: Katie Munro (14 points) versus Jefferson, Ideen Seyed (23) against Burlingame and Meg Enthoven (16) versus Hillsdale. Seyed and teammate Meghan McDermott made the all-tournament team. St. Francis boosted its record to 8-0 with a 57-25 rout of host Los Gatos Dec. 14. Daisha Abdelkader scored 14 points for the Lancers, ahead 39-10 at halftime. Girls soccer St. Francis beat Notre Dame-Belmont 5-1 to open West Catholic Athletic League play Dec. 15. Emma Wangsness scored twice for St. Francis (5-0 overall). Boys soccer A three-win week pushed Mountain View’s record to 5-0-1. The Spartans defeated Palo Alto, Pioneer and Seaside 3-0. Guillermo Burger tallied a goal in each game; Brad Bumgarner scored twice in the Dec. 15 win over Seaside. “(We’re) off to a pretty good start,” coach Jim McGuirk said.
