The Los Altos School District held its annual organizational meeting Dec. 10, bidding farewell to Trustee Bill Cooper and welcoming Pablo Luther to the five-member board.

Cooper, who did not run for re-election in November, steps down after nine years of service on the board.

Teachers, administrators and friends attended the meeting to honor Cooper.

“The teachers on our staff want to say how much they appreciate your support for them and your genuine interest in their concerns,” said Springer School Principal Wade Spenader, speaking on behalf of the district’s administrators. “Those of you who know Bill know he is positive, upbeat and always has a smile on his face. I appreciate the support you have given to me as a principal and a teacher, and I thank you for your service.”

Former longtime board trustee Margot Harrigan also paid tribute to the departing Cooper.

“He has served bravely and consistently,” she said. “It was a pleasure working with Bill. We didn’t always agree – we agreed to disagree. But that is what makes a great board.”

Cooper’s exit paved the way for a new face on the board – Luther, who won the seat in the Nov. 6 election. Appointed incumbent Steve Taglio retained his seat.

The annual organizational meeting serves as a changing of the guard for board appointments. For the next year, Doug Smith will serve as board president, Tammy Logan as vice president and Taglio as clerk.
