Marcia and Richard Campbell of Los Altos, above, survey the elaborate model train layout in their home.

Nothing says Christmas like a train set under the tree – especially if it’s a 1908 Lionel that is only brought out once a year.

Richard and Marcia Campbell, Los Altos residents for 42 years, received the hand-me-down train from a great uncle. After a drop of oil, the train still runs well.

“That’s pretty good for a 104-year-old,” Richard said.

The Campbells’ trains aren’t only for Christmas. They have a room full of HO and Z model trains that run year-round. Richard spends time during the year working on the display with Marcia, which gives them many hours of enjoyment.

Marcia, an artist who taught kindergarten for 30 years in local schools, helps Richard make scenery for the train sets and brings him hot chocolate while he works on the large display.

The Campbells have grown children and grandchildren who enjoy playing with the trains that may someday be theirs.

I've seen this layout and it is unbelievably detailed -- not surprising for an award-winning architect.
