Whole Foods fundraiser benefits schools today

The Los Altos Whole Foods Market has pledged to donate 5 percent of today’s sales to the Mountain View Los Altos High School Foundation.

Foundation officials are asking locals to do their holiday shopping for entertaining, gifts and more today to raise money for the foundation.

Last year the high school foundation raised $1.2 million for the Mountain View Los Altos Union High School District to fund instructional support, academic infrastructure, and college and career preparation.

Whole Foods is located at 4800 El Camino Real.

K-Kids collect toiletries for CSA

The Loyola School K-Kids Club is collecting toiletries to donate to the Community Services Agency. Volunteers are accepting contributions of new toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, hand sanitizers and shampoos.

Place donations in the box at the Loyola School office at 770 Berry Ave., Los Altos. The drive ends Friday.

Living Classroom seeks volunteers

The Los Altos School District’s Living Classroom Program seeks volunteers who enjoy working with students and appreciate nature.

The program reaches all grade levels within the district and includes hands-on education in science, math and social studies. A docent and often an assistant docent along with one or two volunteer parents direct lessons inside or outside the classroom.

Training and materials are provided. Training sessions are scheduled 8:30-11:30 a.m. Jan. 14 and 28 and Feb. 4 at the school district offices, 201 Covington Road, Los Altos.

Local groups recruit volunteers

JustREAD, a nonprofit, community-funded literacy program, seeks tutors to work at least one hour a week to help middle and high school students with reading.

The program trains tutors, who work one-on-one with students in a supervised classroom setting during the school year.

JustMATH, a community-volunteer math tutoring program, needs volunteer tutors to work at least one hour per week to help students improve their math skills.

The supervised programs are held at Graham and Crittenden middle schools in Mountain View.

Music for Minors needs volunteers

Music for Minors seeks volunteers interested in training to become music teachers for students in kindergarten through third grade.

The nonprofit organization, devoted to keeping music alive in local schools, provides sequential, standards-based music education programs for children throughout Santa Clara and San Mateo counties.

Music for Minors will provide volunteers all the tools necessary to teach music in the elementary classroom. Training is provided, and volunteers may attend sessions in Los Altos or Redwood City.
