John Hedley assembles the tyrannosaur bone last week for display at Nature Gallery in Los Altos. Carol Garsten, owner of Nature Gallery in downtown Los Altos, is getting a leg up on the holiday season. Literally. As she prepares for the gallery’s 25th anniversary festivities, scheduled this weekend, Garsten brought in paleontologist John Hedley to install a 7-foot-tall leg of a juvenile tyrannosaur. The leg will remain on display through the new year.
“A full-sized one would never fit in here – it would be about 14 feet high,” she said. Hedley, with another dinosaur leg and skull in tow, is scheduled to attend the anniversary party, “87 Rocks Holiday Collection,” 5-8 p.m. Friday, where he will discuss the business of selling fossils. Garsten wouldn’t name a price for the leg, which is for sale. “I want people to come in and talk about it,” she said. The bones of the newly installed tyrannosaur, weighing 50-60 pounds, rest in a custom-built steel frame. Fragments found in the Gobi Desert were pieced together to reconstruct the bones. The original fossilized bone is 90 percent complete. “Even when they break up, it’s easy to put the pieces back together like a jigsaw puzzle,” Hedley said. The gallery’s anniversary events begin 5 p.m. Friday with the party and charity benefit for Peninsula HealthCare Connection. Musician Samantha Bell will perform classical acoustic guitar. A variety of events are scheduled Saturday and Sunday. Saturday’s festivities include a feng shui workshop by Master Linda Lenore 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and a 3-5 p.m. discussion with U.S. Geological Society geologist Leslie C. Gordon, “If Rocks Could Talk, What Would They Tell Us About the Earth?” Nature Gallery will host a children’s art collage class on rocks and fossils conducted by Gunn High School teacher Deanna Messinger 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday. Nature Gallery, located at 296 State St., opened in San Luis Obispo in 1987 and moved to Palo Alto in 1994 before relocating to Los Altos last February.
