Saturday is the deadline for Los Altos residents to file an appeal for a sewer charge reduction.

A few years ago, the city of Los Altos, in response to a new state law, transitioned from a flat rate for sewer use to a variable billing rate intended to be based on consumption, deemed a more fair assessment.

Residents are encouraged to file appeals if they think their rates are too high.

Residents can reduce next year’s sewer service charge by saving water this winter by reducing or turning off outside irrigation in the rainy months.

The state’s Franchise Tax Board may rule that sewer service charges will no longer be a deductible part of property taxes.

For more information or to access an appeal form, visit www.losaltosca.gov.
