It didn’t take Nancy Xu long to realize what she was up against at Red Hill Country Club, site of last week’s CIF Girls State Golf Championships.

On the par-4 second hole, the St. Francis High junior shot a nine.

“It was a bit of a rough day,” said Xu, who tied for 33rd with an 88. “I wasn’t expecting the course to be that hard.”

Her Nov. 13 round included seven pars, and she didn’t bag a birdie on the challenging course.

“I couldn’t feel comfortable with the narrow fairways,” said Xu, who had never before played the course in Rancho Cucamonga. “The greens were super speedy and sloped, and it was hard to make putts.”

The NorCal champ shot a 45 on the front nine and a 43 on the backside. Xu said her best hole of the day was No. 1, which she parred by draining a 6-foot putt.

Asked to evaluate Xu’s round, St. Francis coach Phil Marrone said, “Nancy did OK. She hit the ball pretty good for the most part but struggled a bit with the greens. Red Hill is a good course, but it’s sneaky-tricky. ”

Xu vowed to learn from the experience.

“It tells me where I need to improve and what I need to do to get to the next level,” she said. “I have to adapt to the greens on these challenging courses.”

This marked Xu’s first time at state, which included 54 players this year.
