Troop 33 welcomed new Eagle Scouts, from left, Caelan Conant, Austin Browning, Brian DeAngelis, Brian Wipfler and John Wilken. Troop 33 Eagles The Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony for Boy Scout Troop 33 opened with the sound of bagpipes and snare drum. Family, special guests and fellow Scouts gathered at Los Altos United Methodist Church Aug. 26 to commemorate the achievements of five members. Austin Browning, Caelan Conant, Brian DeAngelis, John Wilken and Brian Wipfler were inducted as Eagle Scouts in the Pacific Skyline Council. They are among the 218 Boy Scouts in Troop 33 who have earned the highest rank since the troop was founded 60 years ago.
To earn the Eagle designation, Scouts must progress through six ranks: Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life and Eagle. They must earn a total of 21 merit badges, perform community service, serve a minimum of 12 months in a troop leadership position and complete a service project. • Browning helped the Los Altos Parent Preschool, a school he attended, create a new woodworking center. He oversaw construction of a shade structure, a woodworking table, a woodworking cabinet to store tools and materials and a picnic table. • Conant coordinated a project at Covington School, which he attended, expanding the Living Classroom garden program. He devoted 211 hours to the project, cleaning and leveling the ground to build five new raised garden boxes and installing an irrigation system. • DeAngelis managed a project at Blach Intermediate School, constructing a trellis in the quad to provide shade for students at lunch time. • Wilken designed and supervised construction of a native, drought-tolerant butterfly garden that includes a dry stream with river rocks in the garden at First Presbyterian Church of Mountain View. • Wipfler organized a brass band comprising 17 volunteers who played a total of 167 hours of swing music from the 1930s and ’40s at retirement communities and hospitals. Many thanks to all the volunteers at Los Altos Troop 33! Without you this fantastic program could not succeed. Caelan, you made the grade -- and then more -- and your parents are very proud of you! We have profound respect for what you have accomplished and excited to see all the goodness that has come from your efforts. Brent Browning and Art Bernstein, your personal dedication of 1000s of hours to our troop have been a model of community giving and we will not forget what you have done for our youth.
