Waldorf School of the Peninsula has scheduled a “Parenting with Heart” series that aims to help parents and caregivers become children’s first teachers.

Waldorf School of the Peninsula has opened enrollment for the Winter Session of its new program for toddlers (12-36 months) and their parents or caregivers. The eight-week “Parenting with Heart” series aims to provide families a warm circle of support and encouragement in a nurturing environment.

Kim Bick-Maurischat, who has more than 15 years of experience teaching in both public and Waldorf school settings, teaches the classes.

According to Bick-Maurischat, the series empowers caregivers to feel confident and inspired to serve as the child’s first teacher, to deepen their intuitive knowledge of the child and to guide and support them in the art of nurturing a family.

The first class, “Seeing with a New Eye: Observation and Rhythm,” begins Dec. 3 and meets for eight Mondays with a choice of 8:30 or 11 a.m. start times. The second class, “The Thread Follows the Needle: Seasonal Crafts and Conversation,” is scheduled Tuesdays starting Dec. 4. (No meetings on school holidays.)

In addition to the ongoing classes, “Parenting with Heart” offers a Saturday morning “Family Life” series that supports nurturing family living through presentations and discussions. The sessions are free to families enrolled in the “Parenting with Heart” classes and open to newcomers for $15. “Bedtime: Battle or Bliss” is scheduled Feb. 9 and “Mealtimes: Feeding the Whole Family” March 16.

The $320 fee for the series includes all supplies.

The Waldorf School is located at 11311 Mora Drive in Los Altos. For registration and more information, visit waldorfpeninsula.org or email Bick-Maurischat at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

1"Parent and Teacher"

I have known Kim Bick-Maurishat for 20 years. I was fortunate to have her as my daughter's Nursery teacher. Between her incredibly deep knowledge base, years of experience, her warm, grounded presence, intuitive wisdom and exceptional communication skills, both my child and myself benefitted immensely. My daughter is now in 1st grade at the Waldorf School of the Peninsula with yet another exceptional, high-quality teacher. Such teachers are not the exception at Waldorf, I must note!

With the task of parenting well being so complex, the opportunity to avail oneself of truly conscious, thoughtful and intelligent support is not one to pass up. As a parent of 3, and as a public school educator who chose Waldor for my child, I highly recommend the early childhood program as an excellent start.

It is no overstatement to say that choosing to be part of the Waldorf community has ended up being a path of growth as a parent and a person. I am truly grateful.
