Edith Cooper is flanked by her son, Graham Cooper, and Laura Zulueta, director of residents services at Los Altos Sub-Acute and Rehabilitation Center. Edith recently turned 104 years old. Edith Cooper, a resident of Los Altos for more than 20 years, recently celebrated her 104th birthday. She saw nearly all of the 20th century unfold before her eyes.
Edith remembers the first Model T Ford to hit the streets, the organization of the women’s suffrage movement and the first man to walk on the moon. Born Sept. 20, 1908, in Coventry, England, Edith remains alert as she looks intently into the eyes of her son Graham. However, at 104, she requires some assistance communicating. Graham usually serves as intermediary for conversations. The eldest of four siblings, Edith married Frank Cooper in 1933. After 40 years of marriage, Frank passed away at age 66. They have two sons, Graham and Anthony. Anthony and his wife, Audrey, have added two grandchildren, Julia and Richard. When asked her secrets to longevity, Graham said Edith was a bicyclist, ate all the salt and sugar she wanted, occasionally drank a glass of sherry and never smoked. Edith experienced World War I in England when she was only 5 years old, Graham said. During World War II, she worked at a manufacturing facility, British Piston Ring Co., in her hometown until the end of the war in 1945. She moved from England to Los Altos during the 1980s to help take care of her grandchildren. “She is a very wonderful woman, very caring,” Graham said. “She is the very best.” Now residing at the Los Altos Sub-Acute and Rehabilitation Center, Edith spends most of her time resting or doing leisurely activities such as listening to music or watching TV.
