When it comes to timing, you couldn’t ask for a closer connection than having the Capitol Steps scheduled at Flint Center the week before the presidential election. The group performed as part of the Foothill College Celebrity Forum Speaker Series.

The antics of Capitol Steps players charged up the audience with their unique blend of music and bipartisan political satire. The group claims to have put the “mock” back in “democracy” – and no one is safe from its barbs.

Founded by congressional staffers, the group, celebrating its 30th year of lampooning Congress and political parties, has recorded 32 albums. The group’s latest album, “Take the Money and Run: For President,” was the theme for the Flint Center program.

The seven performers changed characters during the program so that it became difficult to determine who played each role simply by changing voice inflection and uniform. I still don’t know who portrayed Donald Trump with his hair all over his face.

Matt Pearson put in numerous appearances as President Barack Obama, but he also was a terrific pirate, an Arab, an Indian chief and other identities. In most of his appearances, Mike Thornton played opposite him in sketches. Tracy Stephens performed in a scene about airport security that brought down the rafters.

Every politician was fair game. “President Obama” asked the audience to call their representatives and urge them to vote for the jobs bill, “because I may need one next year.”

“Obama” immediately requested that his teleprompter be turned on.

That remark was countered with: “How many Democrats would it take to change a light bulb? None, because Republicans love to live in the dark.”

“We really enjoyed the performance,” said auidence member Dennis Young. “A couple of times we missed the next joke because we were laughing so hard. Celebrity Forum outdid itself with this selection.”
