Locals ruled at last week’s Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division cross-country championships. The Los Altos boys and Mountain View girls claimed division titles and the two high schools combined to place nine boys and eight girls among the top 20 finishers in their respective races Oct. 30.
Mountain View senior Maya Weigel won the girls race – finishing the 2.95-mile Crystal Springs course in 17 minutes, 56.7 seconds – while Los Altos freshman Lauren Jacob placed second (18:04). “I talked to Maya before the race and told her she could dictate the pace according to how she felt,” Spartans coach Ken Wilner said. “She went out fast and took the lead from the start. We knew that Lauren from Los Altos would try to make Maya do all the work.” Weigel led by only a few yards at the mile mark, according to Wilner, and by a few seconds with 800 meters to go. Weigel finished under 18 minutes for the first time – coming in exactly one minute faster than she did at last year’s meet – and set a personal record by 11 seconds. Jacob set a personal record as well, posting a time that ranks as the 10th best among freshmen girls who have competed at Crystal Springs. “That is a pretty big accomplishment, considering the course has been around for over 40 years, and has been host of many national-caliber meets,” Los Altos coach Dan Oren said. Mountain View’s Melissa Reed, a junior, finished third (18:34.6). The Spartans had three more girls in the top 20: junior Laura Reynolds (eighth, 19:48.6), senior Rikki Fearon (18th, 20:52.8) and sophomore Amy Lynch (19th, 21:00.6). Their combined efforts provided the Spartans with 49 points, good enough to fend off runner-up Palo Alto by six points. Los Altos finished a distant third. The Eagles placed two other girls in the top 15 – seniors Claire Bowie (11th, 20:15) and Louise Stephan (15th, 20:46) – and another just outside the top 20 in junior Wendy Wu (21st, 21:12.2). The Los Altos boys dominated their division, placing four runners among the top seven. The Eagles beat second-place Milpitas by 15 points. Junior Terence Rabuzzi paced Los Altos, clocking a 15:50 to secure second place. Senior Alex Carr came in fourth (16:11), freshman Ben Zaeske finished fifth (16:22) and senior Josh Cohen took seventh (16:39). Two more Eagles finished among the top 20: senior John Beutter (14th, 16:53) and junior Dane Tippett (17th, 16:58.5). Mountain View placed third as a team and had the third-best finisher in Nick Van Osdol (16:06.2). Fellow senior David Williams came in sixth (16:22.3) and sophomore Zheng Tian took 18th (16:59.1).
