Pop-up encourages alternative gift giving and supports education in Kenya

Local shoppers this week can find one-of-a-kind jewelry, textiles, home décor, bath products and other handmade gifts from artists working in co-ops in Africa and the U.S. at a pop-up boutique benefiting the Kilgoris Project – an organization that educates and feeds children in southwest Kenya.

Shoppers can also give an "alternate gift" by donating to cover the salary of a teacher in Kenya.

The pop-up at 359 State St. will be open for only four days. Store hours are 6-9 p.m. Thursday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

According to project co-founder Caren McCormack, the shop in Los Altos is one of several on a nationwide tour. In addition to supporting 650 children at six schools in Masai villages of Kenya, proceeds from the boutique will help the organization provide Kindle Readers in the classroom, as well as build additional schools to meet community needs.

Holiday Stroll brings shoppers downtown delight

More than 50 shops in downtown Los Altos will open their doors for the 10th Annual Holiday Stroll 5-9 p.m. Friday (Nov. 9).

In addition to getting an early start to the holiday shopping season, visitors will be treated to free carriage rides, caroling on the street and festive snacks and beverages.
