McConnell celebrates $15.5 million donation to Montalvo Arts Center

Los Altos resident Angela McConnell, executive director of Montalvo Arts Center, shared during Montalvo’s gala last month that a donor contributed a $15.5 million gift to jump-start the facility’s five-year, $50 million capital campaign.

Celebrating its centennial this year, McConnell pointed to Montalvo’s expanded arts education, outreach events, “really amazing” public performances and a broader artist residency program.

The capital campaign will address current needs as well as future plans.

“It needs love,” McConnell said of the center’s 100-year-old buildings and grounds, which require major repairs. “We want to make sure Montalvo is here for another century.”

McConnell, in her third year as executive director, highlighted Montalvo’s numerous cultural gifts, from its manicured grounds to its literary, visual and culinary arts – all on 175 acres at 14000 Fruitvale Ave., Saratoga, 11 miles from Los Altos.

“We’ve defined what distinguishes us with the Montalvo experience,” McConnell said.

Improvements and upgrades are ongoing. “Final Fridays” is among several new programs in which artist residents at Montalvo share their work with the community on the last Friday of every month. Ground crews are scheduled to replace the front lawn beginning Nov. 9.
