MVLA sponsors parent education event The Los Altos-Mountain View School Speaker Series has scheduled Larry Rosen to discuss “Parenting the iGeneration and Generation C: Why Our Kids Love Technology, and What It Is Doing to Their Brains” 7-9 p.m. Nov. 8 in Mountain View High School’s Spartan Theater, 3535 Truman Ave. Rosen, professor and past chairman of the psychology department at Cal State Dominguez Hills, is a research psychologist with specialties in multitasking, social networking, generational differences, parenting, child and adolescent development and educational psychology.
His presentation will include information on what students are doing with media and technology, how multitasking impacts their brains and sleep and parenting tips for dealing with children’s “media diet.” The Mountain View-Los Altos High School Foundation and the Los Altos-Mountain View PTA Council co-sponsor the event. Family concerts benefit MV nursery school Grammy Award-nominated children’s singer/songwriter Justin Roberts and his Not Ready for Naptime Players are scheduled to perform family concerts 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Nov. 18 at Foothill College’s Smithwick Theatre, 12345 S. Living Classroom recruits volunteers The Los Altos School District’s Living Classroom Program seeks volunteers who enjoy working with students and appreciate nature. The program reaches all grade levels within the district and includes hands-on education in science, math and social studies. A docent and often an assistant docent along with one or two volunteer parents direct lessons inside and outside the classroom. Training and materials are provided. Local high schools seek college-prep mentors MVLA Community Scholars is recruiting additional members for its College Prep Mentoring program. The program pairs AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) seniors at the schools with mentors who shepherd them through the college application process. AVID’s goal is to prepare students for college and success in their future. The students typically come from low-income, immigrant families and are the first in their families to attend college. There are currently 54 AVID students enrolled in the two high schools. Mentors are asked to help one or two students develop a college list, complete college applications, edit his/her college essays and apply for scholarships and financial aid. Mentors meet with their students once a week throughout the school year during an AVID class period. The schools’ AVID teachers, College and Career counselors and the MVLA Scholars Program support the mentors throughout the process. Mentors must be committed for the entire school year. Los Altos High mentors are scheduled to meet 8-9 a.m. Fridays. Mountain View High mentors will meet 8:50-9:50 a.m. Wednesdays. No prior experience is necessary.
