Almond School dads perform a flash mob as they dance to “Gangnam Style.”

The viral video “Gangnam Style,” viewed nearly 500 million times on the video-sharing site YouTube, came to Los Altos at the Almond School Walkabout Oct. 13.

A flash mob of nearly 50 Almond dads, clad in white T-shirts, sunglasses and jeans, suddenly appeared in the center of the school’s annual fundraising walkathon track when the hit song played.

On cue, the dads threw down their black jackets, donned sunglasses and commenced 60 seconds of precision choreography, which paid homage to the catchy, cheesy song and dance that have swept the nation. The Korean artist PSY, singer of “Gangnam Style,” has appeared on “The Ellen Degeneres Show,” “The Today Show,” CNN and “Saturday Night Live.” During an encore flash mob, numerous students joined the caper, matching the dads’ “Lasso” and “Invisible Horse” dance moves made famous by the video.

“There are those who believe dads can be more involved in our schools,” said Ed Han, one of the flash mob’s organizers. “I hope this performance puts to bed such myths and proves how dead serious we dads are about our children and their futures. There is no bigger statement that could be made than a ‘Gangnam Style’ flash mob.”

The theme for Almond School’s Walkabout and Silent Auction, “Walk Around the Clock,” keyed off the 1950s hit “Rock Around the Clock.” The band Fully Funded, which included two Almond dads, played at the event.

“Everyone had a fabulous time at Almond’s Walkabout and Silent Auction,” Principal Nancy Davis said. “The dads’ flash mob dance was the very special surprise event of the day. Everyone came to support Almond in a very inclusive way.”

Home-cooked tacos and burritos prepared by Almond families, Jamba Juice and hamburgers, veggie burgers, Spot Pizza and ice cream sundaes fueled the student walkers.

It was wonderful to have 25 Almond families pouring their hearts into preparing delicious homecooked Mexican food,” Davis said. “Every Walkabout is the best ever, but I mean it when I say this really was the best ever.”

Families browsed the auction items in addition to taking advantage of photo opportunities with 1950s-themed cutouts and a vintage 1957 Chevy Wagon while enjoying coffee drinks provided by Caffino.

All proceeds benefit the Almond School PTA.
