Photo Town Crier File Photo The Los Altos City Council recently approved the final design details for Phase 1B of the First Street streetscape project. Construction is slated to begin in the spring.

The $1.3 million project, slated to begin in the spring, calls for sidewalk and roadway improvements along First Street, spanning from the State Street intersection to Shasta Street.

A staff report outlined project design details, which include the installation of five bike racks in various locations along the stretch of First Street, the installation of public art pads in front of 127 and 199 First St. and the removal of string lights spanning the intersection of First and State streets. Rain gardens will be located in new planters in front of 121 and 127 First St.

The project also provides for the planting of Chinese Pistache trees along First and two new Crape Myrtles near Parking Plaza 7. The project will feature a midblock crosswalk with hard-wired lights between the plaza and Safeway.

The project’s timeline schedules sidewalk construction to begin mid-May, with completion prior to the Los Altos Arts & Wine Festival in July. After the festival, the city will close the intersection of State and First streets for further work, with a completion date of Sept. 30.

The project includes the replacement of streetlights and First Street road repaving from the State Street intersection to Edith Avenue. The repaving is scheduled for 2014, according to Assistant City Manager James Walgren. The date depends on the completed construction of the new Safeway and the multiunit housing development at 100 First St.
