On Sunday, October 7, 2012, Arthur Bergin Dunne, Jr. passed away gently at his daughter’s home in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he had been living for the last several years. He was 89.

A third generation native San Franciscan, he was the eldest son of Arthur Bergin and Elizabeth MacArthur Dunne. He was a graduate of The Thacher School in Ojai, California (Class of 1942) and of Stanford University (Class of 1947). He was a member of the Stanford soccer team, a running companion of his grandfather, Robert MacArthur, an enthusiastic skier, and an artful carpenter. He served in the Navy during World War II as a Seabee, completing his education after his return from active duty.

In 1953, he married Eve Rosamund Bordé of Santa Monica and together they traveled the world as he pursued his engineering career building a dam in Tunisia, a tailrace tunnel in New Zealand, and the tunnel housing NORAD in Cheyenne Mountain, Colorado, among other projects.

He and Eve raised three children along with generations of Golden Retrievers, were avid golfers, and always remained devoted to their California roots and heritage.

Bergin was preceded in death by Eve, and by his sister, Betsy, and her husband, Martin Skewes-Cox, but is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Wendy and Gregory Smith of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Doreen Dunne of Houston, Texas; daughter and son-in-law, Margaret Dunne and Herb Rice, of Napa, California; grandchildren Malcolm Bordé Smith and Bergin Elizabeth Smith of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; brother and sister-in-law, Peter and Kay Dunne of Burlingame, California; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Lynn Dunne of Bainbridge Island, Washington; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. He is also survived by Norman and Mary Alice Smith of Longwood at Oakmont who embraced him as one of their own upon his move to Pittsburgh, adding much enjoyment to his transplanted home. He was lovingly cared for by the dedicated staff of Eastern Area Adult Services, as well as Family Hospice and Palliative Care, for which his family is enormously grateful.

Services were held with family and close friends at Spangler Mortuary in Los Altos, California on Thursday, October 18. Burial was attended by immediate family in Cambria, California where he was laid to rest with Eve near the site of a Bordé pioneering family home. He will be joyously remembered and dearly missed.
