Friends of the Library of Los Altos and Community is celebrating the sixth annual National Friends of Libraries Week through Saturday.

The organization supports the Los Altos libraries through volunteering, fundraising and advocating for library issues in the community.

Through their efforts, the libraries receive supplemental funding to augment their collections and programming budgets. Friends volunteers also provide feedback that helps the libraries deliver programs and services that are relevant and valuable to local residents.

Friends of the Library raises more than $130,000 annually via book sales, ongoing sales in the library, lobby paperback sales, sales of books on the Internet and the Friends Cafe, located in the lobby of the main library. The group uses the funds to purchase children’s, adult and teen materials; underwrite programs and speakers; and support summer reading programs.

To thank Friends of the Library volunteers, the Los Altos main library, 13 S. San Antonio Road, has erected a large-scale “thank-you Friends” card that people can sign through Saturday to express their appreciation.
