Haley

Shannon Haley has been writing songs for much of her life. Although she sang in the Main Street Singers at Los Altos High School and studied opera at UCLA, “I just had this other music out there,” she said last week. “I finally got the courage to do it.”

She found a kindred spirit in singer Ryan Michaels of Palo Alto, whom she met last year in Nashville. Now part of the country-pop duo Haley & Michaels, Haley is scheduled to sing her songs when the pair performs 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Club Fox, 2223 Broadway St., Redwood City.

Haley, who graduated from UCLA in 2008, has found some early success in the music business. The duo are fresh off wins for Best Pop/Rock Band and Best Live Performers at the Nashville Independent Music Awards. They recently shot a music video for their debut single, “The Price I Pay.”

“It was the first thing we wrote together,” said Haley, who cites James Taylor and Sheryl Crow as musical influences.

Haley said she’s written hundreds of songs, and she doesn’t use an instrument to write.

“It comes to me in my head,” she said, laughing about “so many little napkins” on which she’s penned her ideas.

She looks forward to performing locally.

“Los Altos is the most special place in the world for me,” she said.
