The Los Altos High boys cross-country team ran away with the third Santa Clara Valley Athletic League meet of the season, placing four competitors among the top five Oct. 16 at Baylands Park in Sunnyvale. “We were fully loaded today and it showed with LA dominating the lead pack and leading the whole way,” said Charles Alexander, who – along with fellow assistant Pam Harris – coached the Eagles in place of the traveling Dan Oren.
Los Altos junior Terence Rabuzzi won the 3.1-mile race in 16 minutes, 18.7 seconds. Two teammates finished right behind him – senior Josh Cohen (16:28.6) and freshman Ben Zaeske (16:35.7). Another Eagle, senior Alex Carr (16:55.1), came in fifth. Junior Konrad Niemiec rounded out Los Altos’ team score – a scintillating 25 – by placing 15th with a 17:27.0. Lynbrook finished a distance second to the Eagles in the 14-team meet with a 70. Mountain View took 12th with a 308. The Los Altos girls turned in a solid performance, too, placing third by scoring 104 (Monta Vista won with a 75), despite the absence of one of its top runners. Freshman Lauren Jacob paced the Eagles with a second-place time of 19:02.6. Senior Claire Bowe finished seventh (20:13.4). Juniors Wendy Wu (21:35.7) and Elizabeth Bishop (personal-best 22:04.4) placed 30th and 42nd, respectively; sophomore Kristen Adams (22:18.1) came in 43rd. “The entire team has been working really hard,” Harris said, “and it’s really paying off at the right time.” The Mountain View girls secured sixth with a 150. Junior Melissa Reed led the Spartans with a time of 21:19.8, good enough for 21st place. Senior Maya Weigel (21:22.0) finished right behind her. Senior Rikki Fearon (21:32.9) and junior Lauren Reynolds (21:34.4) took 28th and 29th, respectively, while sophomore Amy Lynch (22:44.6) finished 50th. The Spartans ran better Saturday, finishing second at the Monterey Bay Invitational. Weigel won her division and Reed placed third.
