April 13, 1925 –

September 25, 2012

On a beautiful Fall day, as the leaves begin to turn, Joanne made her journey from this world at the age of 87. She was born and raised in San Francisco, the foggy, diverse city that she loved. She graduated from Washington High School and attended U. C. Berkeley where she made lifelong friends who became her beloved “Pot Luck Crowd”. As a teenage girl, she met a handsome young sailor who was visiting her neighbors. Who would have thought that many years later, they would fall in love, and in 1947 Joanne and Bob became husband and wife. As was common for many post-war newlyweds, Joanne, who was a bright and motivated student, left Cal to put her husband through school on the GI Bill.

Together, Joanne and Bob (deceased 2007) lovingly raised their three children, Rob (deceased 1970), Robin LaRoy (Jim), and Claudia Winkelman (John, deceased 2011). She adored and so enjoyed her four granddaughters, Christina LaRoy, and Lauren, Lindsay, and Annie Winkelman.

After moving to Mountain View in 1967, Joanne worked for Vidar/TRW and then Varian Associates until her retirement in 1992. Together, Joanne and Bob enjoyed cultural events including Pops concerts in the City, community theater, speaker forums, and traveling. Joanne had a keen interest in politics and read her newspaper everyday, cover to cover! One of Joanne’s greatest gifts was her ability to make friends. When she made a friend, she kept them forever.

A celebration of Joanne’s life will be held Saturday, November 17, 2012 at 2:00PM at Los Altos United Methodist Church, 655 Magdalena Avenue, Los Altos, CA.
