Adam Granath, left, and Doug MacEwen earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest honor in Boy Scouts. Los Altos Boy Scout Troop 37 members Adam Granath and Doug MacEwen earned their Eagle Scout ranks, joining the 2 percent of all Scouts who reach the highest achievement in Boy Scouts. Granath has been active in Scouting since age 7. He began as a Cub Scout in Pack 77 in 2001 and joined Troop 37 in 2005. In Troop 37, Granath earned 22 merit badges. He has held several positions in the troop, including assistant senior patrol leader, troop guide and kayak camp waterfront lifeguard.
For his Eagle project, he gave back to his alma mater, Almond School, by designing and building a dedicated storage system for the drama club to house its costumes, props and other equipment. He and his fellow Scouts contributed more than 170 service hours to complete the project. Granath graduated last June from Bellarmine College Preparatory in San Jose as a President’s Scholar and AP Scholar with Distinction. Currently a freshman at the University of Colorado at Boulder, he is studying civil engineering. Granath is the son of Jennifer and Derek Granath of Los Altos. MacEwen began his Scouting career as a Cub Scout in Pack 77. He completed 21 merit badges in Troop 37 and served in a variety of leadership roles, including co-leading a trip to Death Valley last February. He received the Triple Crown Award for completing the three high-adventure programs at Philmont Scout Ranch (hiking more than 60 miles in New Mexico), Northern Tier (canoeing more than 100 miles in the U.S. and Canada) and Florida Sea Base. Fewer than 1 percent of all Scouts earn the Triple Crown. MacEwen was among five Scouts who were the first to receive the award in the Pacific Skyline Council. For his Eagle project, Mac-Ewen worked with the Moffett Field Museum to diagnose and repair the drive and electrical systems, incorporate an interactive start/stop button and build a table for the 5-axis motion simulator on loan from NASA. MacEwen and his fellow Scouts spent 107 hours on the project. MacEwan graduated in June from Woodside Priory School with Dean’s Honors. He was a member of the National Honor Society and an AP Scholar with Distinction. He is currently a freshman at the University of Michigan, where he is majoring in engineering. He is the son of David and Jennifer MacEwen of Los Altos. Troop 37, founded in 1918, is the oldest continually active Boy Scout troop in the Pacific Skyline Council, Stanford District.

I am so proud of my grandson, Eagle Scout Adam, and his fellow Eagle Scout, Doug. Both young men have dedicated many hours and worked hard on all their projects. I look forward to attending their Court of Honor Ceremony in Nov.
