Los Altos rocks this weekend The Peninsula Gem & Geology Society has scheduled a Recreation with Rocks Show 10 a.m. to 5 p.m Saturday and Sunday at the Los Altos Youth Center, 1 N. San Antonio Road. Admission is $3 adults, $2 youth 12-18 and free for children under 12.

Native plants for sale at Hidden Villa The California Native Plant Society has scheduled its semiannual Native Plant Sale 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Hidden Villa, 26870 Moody Road, Los Altos Hills. California native plants are naturally adapted to local soil and climate changes; thrive without amendments, fertilizers or pesticides; and offer habitat value. A free one-hour class on success with native plants is slated at 1 p.m. The nonprofit, all-volunteer CNPS Nursery opens to the public twice a year: in the spring and in the fall. Proceeds fund chapter activities such as the Gardening with Natives group, field trips, conservation, education and the Trust for Hidden Villa. Parking is free. Local flower arranger blooms in special event Carolyn Barnes, a Los Altos flower arranger, is scheduled to discuss “English Flowers Abloom … Arrangements Re-created from the Jubilee Year Chelsea Flower Show” 9:30-11:30 a.m. Oct. 24 at the Freidenrich Conference Center at the Oshman Jewish Community Center, 3921 Fabian Way, Palo Alto. Barnes is a former home, garden and crafts columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle and the Town Crier. The event will include an English breakfast tea, Barnes’ short photo overview of the Chelsea Flower Show and re-creation of five award-winning arrangements and a silent auction. Tickets are $30-$35. Library district sponsors children’s art contest Children in grades K-8 are invited to submit original art to the Santa Clara County Library District’s “We Are America” contest, in support of “Searching for Democracy,” a California Reads program in partnership with Cal Humanities. Entrants may submit a painting, collage, drawing or photograph no larger than 8.5-by-11 inches. A panel will judge two entries along with a short paragraph on “What Makes America Great?” The contest is divided into three categories: K-2, 3-5 and 6-8. Winners will receive art supplies, and their artwork will be featured on the library’s website and in displays in the library.
