 Photo Town Crier File Photo Installation of a traffic signal at Foothill Crossing Shopping Center is designed to ease access and boost pedestrian safety. The Los Altos City Council Sept. 25 approved the Homestead Road Improvements Project, which includes the installation of a traffic signal at the main entrance to the Foothill Crossing Shopping Center.
A combination of Proposition 1B and Highway Safety Improvement Program grants will fund the $1 million plan. No city funds will be applied to the project.
According to a city staff report, the project calls for installation of a traffic light and crosswalks at the shopping center and median islands, with landscaping and irrigation systems at various locations along Homestead Road.
The staff report highlighted drainage improvements, a lighted crosswalk at Homestead and Fallen Leaf Lane, and construction of a new 10-foot-wide pedestrian pathway along Homestead between Grant Road and the Sunnyvale city border. Caltrans, Santa Clara County and the cities of Sunnyvale and Cupertino will coordinate the construction.
According to Los Altos Engineering Division Director Jim Gustafson, the project includes installation of sensors on the Foothill Crossing property that prioritize signal cycles for vehicles waiting to exit the center’s parking lot. The city conducted a traffic analysis of the proposed signal that determined that installation would decrease vehicle queues at the shopping center during peak traffic conditions.
“It will reduce the queue of cars waiting to leave Trader Joe’s by approximately 50 percent,” said Gustafson, who noted that he expects the city to award the construction contract in late 2012 or early 2013.
Gustafson added that the city would start construction sometime in early summer of 2013, timing it during summer vacation for area schools.
