Just when it looked like Los Altos High’s football season couldn’t get any worse, it did. The Eagles (0-4) had to forfeit last Saturday’s home game against San Benito “due to injuries and illness,” athletic director Kim Cave said.
School officials announced the cancellation of the non-league contest Sept. 25. “I made the decision to forfeit the game due to team health,” coach Rudy Alcala. “I feel bad because San Benito is a great team and wants to play every week.” The Eagles, who started the season with 34 players, limped into their previous game and lost a few more players to injuries by the end of the 55-8 loss to Mountain View Sept. 21. “Safety is our first concern for these players,” Cave said. Los Altos began practice last week with only 18 players and Alcala said two were not cleared for contact due to injuries. Four players were out sick, another was on vacation and nine were sidelined by injuries “that will last over a week, maybe longer,” the coach said. San Benito (3-2) lists 68 players on its roster. The Eagles are scheduled to host Cupertino (5-0) 3:15 p.m. Friday to open their Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division slate. Cave and Alcala both said they expect the game to happen. “We will rest and heal so we can be ready for our next game,” Alcala said. Lancers crush Cathedral St. Francis got its West Catholic Athletic League season off to a stellar start, routing host Sacred Heart Cathedral 28-0 Saturday at Kezar Stadium. Mike Lauck threw four touchdown passes for the Lancers (2-2 overall), two in each half. He connected with Charlie Clark (29 yards), Brycen Carbonel (80 yards), Ryan Johnson (61 yards) and Alex Andrighetto (83 yards).
