|Mountain View gets even with Los Altos in volleyball|

Four days after losing to district rival Los Altos High, Mountain View got even with the Eagles in the SCVAL De Anza Division opener for both volleyball teams.
The Spartans eked out a five-game win over host Los Altos Sept. 18, avenging a loss in the semifinals of the MVLA Invitational.
“I knew that they would come out fired up to play,” Eagles coach Peter Kim said of the Spartans.
Mountain View prevailed 18-25, 25-22, 23-25, 25-23, 17-15, with Hayley Sturgeon delivering the match-clinching kill. Sturgeon totaled 10 kills, while teammates Chanti Holroyd and Becky Slattery contributed 17 and 13 kills, respectively. Megan Robinson tallied 39 assists.
Natalie Dwulet led Los Altos with 18 kills and Meghan McDermott added 13.
Mountain View Thursday won another five-set match, beating Monta Vista to improve to 2-0 in league and 8-4 overall. Slattery notched 17 kills, while Robinson posted 43 assists and six kills.
The Eagles, meanwhile, lost in four games to host Los Gatos. Carmen Annevelink posted 15 kills for Los Altos (7-7 overall).
St. Francis defeated host Bishop O’Dowd in four games Friday. Alex Espinosa notched 12 kills for the Lancers (11-3) in the non-league match.
After an 0-3 start, St. Francis last week won both of its West Catholic Athletic League matches. The Lancers routed Sacred Heart Cathedral 225-269 Sept. 18 at Lincoln Park Golf Club and defeated Mitty 219-232 Thursday at Shoreline Golf Links.
Nancy Xu earned medalist honors both days, posting nine-hole scores of 41 and 37.
Girls water polo
Ally Bakos and Cassey Vannaman scored five goals each in Los Altos’ 14-11 home win over Wilcox Thursday. Goalie Romy Aboudarham made 18 saves.
Two days earlier, the visiting Eagles edged Los Gatos 8-7. Bakos paced Los Altos (3-1 De Anza) with three goals.
Mountain View squeaked by Harker 9-8 in overtime Thursday, upping its record to 2-1 in the SCVAL El Camino Division and 3-3 overall. Isabella Dickerson scored four goals for the Spartans.
Mountain View had a much easier time two days earlier, clobbering Cupertino 16-0. Nine players scored for the Spartans, with Emma Frerichs and Sophie Brotzel tallying three goals each. Goalies Paige Taylor and Daniela Turner combined for the shutout.
St. Francis went 4-0 at the Amanda McDonald Invitational, beating Campolindo 10-4 in Saturday’s tournament final. Courtney Batcheller scored five goals for the Lancers (9-2).
