Golf for good

The 17th annual El Camino Heritage Golf Tournament is scheduled Oct. 8 at Half Moon Bay Golf Links. It is a fundraiser for heart and vascular care at El Camino Hospital in Mountain View. Trail running 101

REI in Mountain View is set to host a free presentation on trail running, led by reps from Salomon shoes, 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday. It will cover the basics of trail running. Benefit bike ride

The second Canary Challenge – a bike ride offering 100-mile, 50-, 75- and 100-kilometer courses – is scheduled Sept. 29 in Palo Alto. Several food and water stops and mechanical and medical assistance will be provided along the course, which begins at VMware, 3401 Hillview Ave. The Canary Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to funding, discovering and developing tests for early cancer detection, hosts the ride. Registration is $100, plus a fundraising goal of at least $400. Proceeds will be donated to the Stanford Cancer Institute, according to organizers. Hiking basics

REI in Mountain View is scheduled to host a free presentation, “Fall Day Hiking Basics,” 7-8:30 p.m. Sept. 27. Swing for the Oaks

The ninth annual Tony Makjavich Memorial Golf Tournament is scheduled Saturday at Monarch Bay Golf Course in San Leandro. Proceeds benefit the Palo Alto Oaks semipro baseball team, founded by Makjavich and now run by Los Altos High graduate Steve Espinoza. Shotgun start for the scramble-format tourney is set for 1:30 p.m. Cost is $150, which includes greens fees, cart, prizes, range balls and tri-tip dinner; $35 for dinner and raffle only.
