Los Altos High water polo player Paul Bergevin shoots against Homestead last week.

Putting their disappointing football opener behind them, the Mountain View High Spartans rallied to beat Burlingame 30-27 Friday.

Trailing 27-15 midway through the third quarter, visiting Mountain View scored the final 15 points to prevail. After fullback Chad Schaumburg scored on a short run late in the third, the Spartans received two points on a safety early in the fourth and quarterback Will Fischer-Colbrie tossed a 15-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Avery with just more than a minute to play (kick failed).

“Our quarterback came through for us,” coach Toure Carter said. “He’s getting more and more confident.”

The Spartans, shellacked 27-3 at home by Sacred Heart Prep the prior week, are scheduled to host rival Los Altos 7:30 p.m. Friday at Foothill College. It is Mountain View’s homecoming game.

The start of the season went from bad to really bad for Los Altos, as Sacred Heart Prep routed the visiting Eagles 70-0 Saturday. Los Altos, which lost its opener 53-8 to Santa Clara a week earlier, trailed 49-0 at halftime of Saturday’s non-league game.

“We did not execute on either side of the ball and specialty teams continue to have major issues,” coach Rudy Alcala said. “This week we will work on just fundamentals – catching, running, blocking and tackling.”

Boys water polo

Los Altos won a pair of games last week, topping Gunn 13-10 Sept. 11 and routing Homestead 15-7 Thursday. Sam Lisbonne scored seven goals versus Gunn and Ian McColl tallied six against Homestead.

Paced by Michael Magee’s five goals, Mountain View defeated Monta Vista 13-9 Thursday to remain undefeated (6-0).

St. Francis beat Serra 12-8 Sept. 12, helped by Jamie Olson’s five goals, to open the season.

Volleyball

St. Francis split its four matches at last weekend’s Mitty Varsity Tournament. The Lancers opened with wins over Oak Ridge and Dos Pueblos, then fell to host Mitty and Santa Margarita.

Earlier in the week, the Lancers (10-3) defeated Homestead and Menlo-Atherton in non-league play. Chloe Lott led St. Francis with 25 kills and 18 digs against Homestead Thursday; Cassie Wes tallied 13 kills in the Sept. 11 victory over Menlo-Atherton.

Los Altos’ four-game loss at Sacred Heart Prep Thursday evened the Eagles’ record at 4-4. Meghan McDermott notched 13 kills for Los Altos and Michelle Albright added eight.

Girls golf

St. Francis dropped to 0-3 with a 203-209 loss to St. Ignatius Sept. 12 at Shoreline Golf Links. Valerie Wang earned medalist honors by shooting a nine-hole score of 37 for the host Lancers.

Girls tennis

Los Altos claimed the Division 3 championship at the California High School Tennis Classic, held Sept. 7-8 in Fresno.

Host Mountain View edged Gunn 4-3 Sept. 12 behind wins from Vivian Li (No. 1 singles), Polina Gorshenina (No. 2), Sheila Ahi (No. 3) and Megan Joseph-Kaye Yap (No. 1 doubles).

Girls water polo

Mountain View fell 8-6 to Monta Vista Thursday, despite three goals from Emma Frerichs.
