Rotary International bestowed its highest honor for an individual on Los Altos resident Allart Ligtenberg this year. Rotary Club of Los Altos President Mona Armistead presented the Service Above Self Award to Ligtenberg at the District meeting June 1-3 at Lake Tahoe.

The international award recognizes individual Rotarians who have rendered exemplary humanitarian service with an emphasis on personal volunteer efforts. It distinguishes Ligtenberg’s humanitarian efforts from the service of 1.2 million Rotarians in 34,000 clubs worldwide.

Ligtenberg’s contributions began in 1992 when he designed and built a solar cooking and water pasteurization system that helped in solving Nepal’s severe health and environment problems. He initiated 21 Rotary Matching Grant programs in nine years for similar relief in Nepal, Indonesia and Afghanistan that improved the quality of life for 3,850 families and empowered the women in those areas.

Sponsored by various Rotary Clubs, Ligtenberg travels to two or three countries each year to install the sustainable solar cooking projects.

Kalyan Banerjee, president of Rotary International, wrote in the tribute to Ligtenberg: “With this award you are being recognized for the contributions you have made through Rotary over the years. I believe you are an extraordinary example of how each Rotarian can make a difference. I an honored to have you as my fellow Rotarian and grateful you have chosen to Reach Within to Embrace Humanity.”
