Following are updates on three construction projects, including two already underway on First Street in downtown Los Altos.

After a two-night strategic planning session last week, Bullis Charter School Principal Wanny Hersey reported that parents continue to support the school’s mission – even in the face of a program split between two campuses next year.

Local realtors explore the future of real estate

Silicon Valley realtors shared their thoughts and ideas on the future of real estate at a National Association of Realtors REThink Initiative Workshop earlier this spring in Santa Clara. MLSListings Inc. hosted the workshop, attended by 125 realtors who practice in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties.

According to realtors, industry experts realize that real estate faces a transformation. Last summer, the National Association of Realtors (NAR) launched the REThink Initiative to gather insights from realtors, academia, consumers and others nationwide to formulate a shared vision about the future realtors want to create for themselves, their association and the industry.

Eliza Ridgeway/Town Crier Beloved family restaurant retires after 30-year run

Local breakfast lovers are eating final, fond orders of biscuits, omelets and homestyle potatoes at Country Gourmet this week. The 30-year-old Mountain View restaurant is closing doors as owner Herman Shaw retires from the business.

Those who live for a weekend snack of French toast topped with grilled bananas, almonds and caramel sauce – or the other specialties at the independent diner – will have to eat their fill by Sunday. The family-run restaurant and the land on which it sits have been sold to a new owner.

School’s not even out yet, but there’s a tempting aroma of summertime fun in the air as a number of regional festivals pop up on the calendar.

Image Author’s riches-to-rags tale offers redemption via Starbucks

Sometimes a book is successful not because it’s exceptionally well written, but because it strikes a nerve with a segment of the population. Such is the case with Michael Gates Gill’s “How Starbucks Saved My Life: A Son of Privilege Learns to Live Like Everyone Else” (Gotham, 2007).

A way to never forget: Haugh About That?

As the afternoon sun poured through the sliding glass window, I Velcroed my 9-year-old body against the kitchen wall and felt its warmth drip down my tummy like hot fudge over vanilla ice cream. Closing my eyes, I prepared to daydream, but the darkness that engulfed me became overwhelming.

“Mom, what’s it like to be dead?” I probed, as she prepared dinner.

MPPC Compassion Weekend benefits community, volunteers

Reminiscent of the biblical story of Jericho, the walls of Menlo Park Presbyterian Church (MPPC) came down, figuratively speaking, April 27 and 28. In place of formal church services, MPPC and its satellite campuses, including Open Door Church in Mountain View, sent out its members to serve the community as part of its eighth annual Compassion Weekend.

“Compassion Weekend is not so much about projects as it is about people,” wrote Mission Pastor Mark Swarner in a booklet describing the service opportunities. “It is about helping children learn, the hungry eat, the lonely find community, the homeless find shelter, the hopeless find hope.”
