Water provided to California Water Service Company (Cal Water) customers in Los Altos, Mountain View, Los Altos Hills and Sunnyvale will be harder than usual through Feb. 6 due to a Santa Clara Valley Water District (SCVWD) pipeline maintenance project.

While the SCVWD project is under way, Cal Water will supplement reduced imported water supplies with local groundwater, which is typically harder because it contains more naturally occurring minerals such as calcium and magnesium. Although the water hardness poses no health concern, Cal Water officials said it can affect the taste, odor, and color of the water, inhibit the water’s ability to create soap lather, and cause a white build-up on glassware, dishes, and plumbing fixtures.

Customers can prevent spotting on dishes and silverware by washing and drying them by hand or drying them immediately after they are washed in the dishwasher. Spots can be removed with white vinegar.

Cal Water serves about 56,000 people through 18,600 service connections in Los Altos and portions of Cupertino, Los Altos Hills, Mountain View, Sunnyvale, and unincorporated areas of Santa Clara County. The company has provided water service in the area since 1931. For more information, call (650) 917-0152 or visit www.calwater.com.
