Business Profile

Wallpaper projects tend to start small and then expand.

"Most people come in just to redo a kitchen or a bathroom, but when they see how easy it is, they go for the whole house," said manager Nader Elgawargui of Wallpapers To Go.

An interior designer, Elgawargui has spent the last six years analyzing his mostly-Los Altos customers' preferences and satisfying them.

"Today's most popular designs are subdued and rich-looking, like faux finish effects and stripes," Elgawargui said. "Wallpaper isn't like clothing that you might only wear one season. It is a 10- to 15-year investment. We make sure the wallpaper will fit in with a customer's furniture and carpets - nobody makes big mistakes here."

At Wallpapers To Go, Elgawargui and his staff encourage customers to take home an entire wallpaper roll and really see how it looks in a room, instead of just holding up a small sample and hoping for the best.

To further simplify the decorating process, the store also offers custom upholstery for furniture in fabrics designed to coordinate with wallpaper patterns; a full range of HunterDouglas window fashions; custom-made draperies and bed coverings; and some 950 different patterns of in-stock wallpaper. There is even a large selection of framed art, ready to take home and hang with the new wallpaper.

Los Altans are especially fond of designs by Ralph Lauren, Laura Ashley, and Van Luit, but they can order virtually any kind of wallpaper available anywhere at a minimum 20 percent discount, he said.

Do Los Altans hang their own wallpapers?

"Yes, the majority of our customers do it themselves, but we help by loaning videos, offering classes and selling all of the equipment you might need," Elgawargui said. "Of course, we also can arrange to have our professional paperhangers do the job."

He said the staff advises customers on the best approach to wallpapering a particular room. For instance, customers should plan exactly where to stop and where to start papering, depending on doorways, windows, and other features. "Customers can bring in measurements and we will tell them exactly how to proceed," he said.

Wallpapers To Go is located at 4700 El Camino Real in Los Altos. For more information, call 941-6912; The Website is: www.wallpaperstogo.com.
