Most 8-year-olds view birthday parties as a time to be showered with gifts, but not Covington School third-grader Alicia Xu.

Alicia asked only for donations to the Los Altos Educational Foundation.

“I want to support LAEF,” Alicia said. “Without it, I would not have Mrs. Pomposo as my third-grade teacher this year.”

The generosity of Alicia, her friends and family enabled her to make a $255 donation to the foundation.

As the school year nears the halfway point, parents, the community and students are pitching in to meet the $2.35 million educational foundation grant promised to the Los Altos School District for the 2010-2011 school year.

Other notable student contributions include $87.43 from a lemonade sale held by Daniel Behar of Santa Rita School and $61.50 from a root-beer float sale the Loyola School K-Kids sponsored.
