Los Altos parents turned out in droves to shop, pick up dinners and support their local schools May 25 at Whole Foods Market, which donated 5 percent of proceeds for the day to the Los Altos Educational Foundation.

“It feels like Christmas,” said a Whole Foods cashier, noting the long lines and full shopping carts.

Scott Yamasaki, Whole Foods Community Programs team leader, said the turnout impressed him.

“One of Whole Foods Market’s core values is caring about our communities and our environment,” he said. “It’s obvious that this community really cares about its public schools and wants to help. Whole Foods is proud to be able to contribute and be a part of such an important success.”

Yamasaki said the event broke the store record for Whole Foods’ 5 percent fundraisers, with the store donating $9,000 to support Los Altos public schools. Since opening in 2006, Whole Foods, located at 4800 Camino Real in Los Altos, has donated more than $42,000 to community organizations.

Funds raised will help the foundation bridge the gap between next year’s budget cuts to public education and the cost of providing a quality education for local students.

“It was wonderful to see the whole community pull together to save staff and programs from being cut,” said Shobana Gubbi, executive director of the Los Altos Educational Foundation.

The foundation has pledged $2.35 million for the coming school year.

“The Whole Foods fundraiser gets us off to a great start,” Gubbi said. “This was a wonderful event and a win-win for our community and Whole Foods.”

The Los Altos Educational Foundation is a non-profit organization of parent volunteers that raises funds from parents and the community to provide enrichment programs and enable smaller class sizes in the nine schools in the Los Altos School District. Tax-deductible donations for the 2010-2011 school year are accepted at www.laefonline.org.
