Los Altos native Ana Homayoun noted the positive effects organization can have on a boy’s life while she was still a student at St. Francis High School.
Homayoun was tutoring a senior failing chemistry, which is required for graduation. When they met, the student had only an accordion file for his schoolwork and no backpack.
“We went through all his papers and found triplicate copies and lost assignments,” Homayoun said.
After she helped him organize and began tutoring him, his chemistry score rose from 51 percent to 73 percent.
“I saw this kid was totally capable but flunking because he was totally disorganized,” she said.
Homayoun has held the positive effects of organization and time-management close to her heart ever since. She shares tips for parents in the recently published “That Crumpled Paper Was Due Last Week: Helping Disorganized and Distracted Boys Succeed in School and Life” (Penguin, 2010).
The book has been included among Amazon.com’s top parenting books since its release Jan. 5.
“The book has been very well received,” Homayoun said.
In her book, Homayoun shows parents how to get disorganized boys focused, engaged and thriving.
“There is an epidemic right now of boys not doing well in high school and college,” she said. “They are academically capable of doing well, but they are struggling with organization and time management.”
While most girls have an easy time with organization, many boys need to be taught how to become organized and study effectively and how to visualize, embrace and meet their goals, Homayoun said.
The book helps parents identify their son’s disorganizational style, assist him to set academic and personal goals that are important to him, design and establish the correct tools, create places to study successfully and teach him how to study and complete assignments without procrastination or all-nighters.
Homayoun, director and founder of the Los Altos business Green Ivy Education Consulting, said she has seen the positive effects of organization and daily time-management when working with students.
“What happened is that we saw (when they were disorganized) their self confidence in all parts of their lives went down,” she said. “Once they became organized and began setting goals for themselves, they were able to transform their entire lives.”
Green Ivy Educational Consulting, located in downtown Los Altos, has five full-time workers who provide academic counseling, SAT preparation and college counseling to approximately 150 students.
The book also outlines tips for parents to improve their sons’ educational experience. Homayoun suggests parents create a study space in the home other than the bedroom where students can do homework on a consistent basis without technological distractions. It is helpful to set a study time every week where students review and schedule upcoming assignments.
“Boys are really struggling in a way they never have before,” Homayoun said. “(The book) is kind of a prescriptive solution with simple things you can do in your home.”
Homayoun is scheduled to discuss her system 7 p.m. March 4 at Egan Junior High School, her alma mater.
