Patti Moore, a first-grade teacher who retired from Los Altos’ Springer School, has launched a lawn-sign business, Stork Stopped Here. The new business rents out 7-foot-tall stork lawn signs to advertise the birth of a new baby in San Jose and surrounding areas.
“Running a business is quite different from teaching, but I use all the same skills,” Moore said. “The big difference is that the storks stay where I put them, unlike the first-graders, who kept me running all day.”
The stork sign “lands” on the lawn of new parents, welcoming them home from the hospital.
“It’s a local business because we personally deliver the 7-foot stork, install it on the new parents’ lawn, then remove the stork at the end of the rental period,” Moore said. “The stork lands with a hand-painted bundle that displays the statistics of the newborn. The bundle is left as a keepsake for the family.”
As a Silicon Valley resident, Moore had access to all the resources she needed to establish her new business. She and tech-savvy neighbors designed the stork and created a Web site. Her son owns a construction company in Benicia that cut the stork design using a computerized router.
“But that’s where the high-tech stopped,” she said. “I paint all the storks and bundles the old-fashioned way – by hand.”
As a grandmother, Moore said she appreciates the excitement surrounding a new baby’s birth.
“When my daughter had our first grandchild, her husband and siblings rented a stork for her lawn. She was thrilled,” Moore said.
But that was in Southern California.
When some of Moore’s Los Altos teaching colleagues had babies, and there wasn’t a local stork-sign rental business in the San Jose area, she said she decided to “fill the gap.”
Moore still participates in projects at Springer, but after 27 years as a teacher, she said she was ready for her new stork adventure to take flight.
Lawn stork signs are available to rent for 5, 7 or 10 days and can be ordered and/or reserved online. Stork Stopped Here offers a smaller version of the keepsake bundle that can be shipped to friends and relatives out of the area. Prices start at $79.
