Managing partner Brian Maxwell examines 9-year-old Rigel at Adobe Animal Hospital Monday.

Adobe Animal Hospital, the veterinary clinic on First Street that has treated local pets for 45 years, is a step closer to moving into a new home. But – hold your horses – it’s still within Los Altos’ borders.

The Los Altos Planning Commission Nov. 19 approved the hospital’s application for a use permit to relocate from its current downtown site to the commercial space previously occupied by Elephant Pharm at 4470 E. El Camino Real.

The commission voted unanimously to recommend that the Los Altos City Council approve the move.

“We’ve outgrown this building,” said Dr. Brian Maxwell, veterinarian and managing partner of the hospital, which opened its doors in 1964. “We’re open around the clock, employ 24 veterinarians and we see about 200-300 patients each day.”

Hoping to move next summer, Maxwell said plans to remodel the 14,000-square-foot facility will be under way soon.

Nearly all the planning commissioners and several residents mentioned having their pets treated at Adobe for several decades, endorsing the hospital’s desire to expand and stay within Los Altos.

“We’re very happy they’re moving in next door,” said John Zhai of Sand Hill Properties, affiliated with Residence Inn by Marriott at 4460 E. El Camino Real.

“Los Altos is honored to have Adobe locate their new facility in this visible location on El Camino Real,” said Anne Stedler, the city’s economic development coordinator. “Adobe’s outstanding service is widely recognized, and as a city and a business community, we want to support Adobe’s continued operation here in town.”

The move is not final until approved by the city council, which plans to vote on the relocation in the near future.
