As the sun went down, so did more of Tessa The’s shots at the Blossom Valley Athletic League Girls Golf Championships.

After shooting 3-over-par on the front nine at San Jose’s Santa Teresa Golf Club, the Los Altos High senior finished the back nine even and won the tournament by a stroke.

p>“It was really long,” The said of the Oct. 27 Central Coast Section qualifier, in which she shot a 74. “We were out there for nearly six hours and I barely got in my round before dark.”

Yet the last two holes proved to be her best. The’s lone birdie came on the 17th, a par 5.

“I hit a really good drive and almost got my second shot on the green,” The said.

She nearly birdied the 18th as well, despite being concerned her second shot would be lost in the dark.

“My birdie shot landed right on the lip,” said The, who recently committed to the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Count Los Altos coach Dave Blasquez among those impressed with The’s performance, calling it “smooth,” in conditions he described as “cold, windy and otherwise miserable.”

The’s teammate, sophomore Lauren Kim, also performed well enough to advance to the CCS championships, finishing third with an 81. Mountain View High junior Michelle Rank made the cut as well, taking seventh by shooting a 90.

The CCS championships were scheduled for Tuesday (after the Town Crier went to press) at Rancho Cañada Golf Club in Carmel.

“I’ve been playing pretty well recently and hope to do well enough to make it to NorCals,” said The, referring to next Monday’s regional championships at Almaden Country Club. “I didn’t make it last year, but I made it to state the year before.”

Boys water polo

Los Altos routed Monta Vista 17-2 Thursday, guaranteeing the team a perfect record (12-0) in the round-robin portion of the De Anza Division. The Eagles (16-4 overall) are the top seed in this week’s league tournament.

Girls water polo

St. Francis placed third in last weekend’s NorCal Championships in Davis with a 7-4 win over Campolindo. Katherine Elward scored three goals for the Lancers, who went 3-1 in the tournament.

Girls volleyball

Mountain View topped rival Los Altos in four games Oct. 27, improving to 6-4 in the SCVAL De Anza Division and 15-10 overall.

The host Spartans received 22 kills, 16 digs, three blocks and six aces from Brittany Howard, along with nine kills and three blocks from Melissa McTighe. Paige Logan notched 15 kills for the Eagles (3-10, 19-13).

Despite season-best efforts from three of its players, Pinewood lost in four games at Mercy-San Francisco Oct. 27. Hailie Eackles had a match- and season-high 22 kills for the Panthers, Michelle Tarlton a season-best 35 assists and Kandace Korver a season-high 17 digs. Eackles added 15 digs.

Pinewood slipped to 2-6 in the West Bay Athletic League.

On the strength of 16 kills by Los Altos resident Tori Carroll, Homestead defeated host Gunn 25-22, 25-22, 25-22 Thursday in De Anza Division action. Samantha Whitford added 10 kills for the Mustangs (2-8, 10-18).

Girls tennis

Los Altos swept a pair of De Anza Division opponents last week. The Eagles beat Cupertino and Lynbrook by 7-0 scores, improving to 5-6 in league and 12-9 overall.

Los Altos won all of its singles matches against Cupertino Oct. 26, with No. 1 player Jamie Eng prevailing 6-0, 6-1.

The next day against Lynbrook, the Eagles won six of the seven matches in straight sets.

“It was our last home match, so it was a sweet victory,” Los Altos coach Hung Nguyen said.

Mountain View followed a 5-2 win at Cupertino with a 7-0 loss at Milpitas last week. The Spartans finish 7-5 in the SCVAL El Camino Division, good enough for fourth place, and 8-7 overall.

Women’s volleyball

Foothill beat San Jose City 25-10, 25-11, 25-15 Oct. 28 behind 12 kills from Brittany Anderson. The Owls improved to 5-0 in the Coast Conference North Division and 18-3 overall.

Women’s water polo

Foothill wrapped up the top seed in the Coast Conference Tournament with Friday’s 11-5 win at West Valley. Los Altos High grad Lauren Pye recorded 16 saves for the Owls (7-0 conference, 20-3 overall).
