Environmental Volunteers, a non-profit education group serving Bay Area schools for 37 years, is seeking volunteers. The organization sends trained volunteers into elementary and middle schools, including Los Altos schools, to teach children about nature by exposing them to environmental issues through hands-on science education.
“The EV teaching method uses small-group, hands-on activities and discovery-based techniques to encourage children’s natural curiosity and help teach them critical-thinking skills,” said Allan Berkowitz, executive director. “We simulate an earthquake in the classroom, allowing students to understand the physics of earthquake waves. Students get to dig into a bucket of Bay mud to explore the Bay’s food chain.”
Last year, Environmental Volunteers taught more than 11,000 local schoolchildren, but the group had to turn some students away. With additional volunteers, the group can serve more classrooms.
No experience is necessary to volunteer. Environmental Volunteers representatives said volunteers must love children, nature and learning. Many volunteers have no teaching experience or background in natural science when they join. The group’s training and mentoring programs provide the skills and materials volunteers need to become natural-science educators.
The volunteer training program begins Oct. 26.
